Project Summary
Jennie recently purchased her first home and was excited to put her personal touch on the space. She’d nearly finished decorating the adjacent living and dining room spaces on the first floor, but there was an odd triangular section of wall along the stairs that needed a little something extra to tie everything together.
Our first goal for Jennie’s home was to create something visually interesting on the triangular section of wall. Since this wall is right next to the entryway, we also wanted the mural to catch guests’ attention as they enter and naturally draw them into the living space. In order to create this pull, I suggested extending the piece across the adjacent walls. The swoopy geometric shapes utilize this additional space to create the desired movement in the piece and lead the eye further into the home. Jennie is an amazing houseplant enthusiast with a house full of all kinds of plants, so it was only fitting that plants and nature be prominent elements of the design.
As for the color palette, we both really loved the shade of blue that Jennie had already chosen for the dining room. Together with the existing off-white wall color, I wanted one more color to provide additional contrast in the piece. Jennie is a fan of jewel tones, so I created mockups with a variety of reds, purples, and greens until we settled on the perfect deep shade of red.
The final piece nails the desired balance of fun and playful but calming while seamlessly integrating with the rest of the living space. It’s an immediate conversation starter for guests as they enter the home, and is a completely unique encapsulation of Jennie’s personality.
